John Hancock Vitality Village #5MoreNow
*Disclaimer: This is a compensated post. All opinions are my own.
John Hancock's Vitality Village at Grand Central was a wake up call for me and many others in attendance. Many of us know that we need to make healthier choices but often need motivation to get us on the right track. It was awesome having so many experts in one place who were all ready, willing & able to share simple ways and small steps we an take that lead to healthier, longer lives. The interactive and informative village introduced me to a number of "ways" to assist me in my journey to become "wholly" healthy in my physical, emotional and financial life. John Hancock's innovative approach to life insurance rewards policy holders for living healthy rewarding them with special savings & rewards!
I completed a survey and was surprised by my Vitality Age, it was a few years older than my real age. I appreciated that I was given a few healthy options to implement that would directly lower my score.Find out your Vitality Age here. LA Fitness was on site to provide trial classes for their military inspired Boot Camp Conditioning classes to help develop strength, stamina and agility. I was excited to experience my very first Boot Camp class and there were participants of all levels working up a sweat. Keri Glassman, registered dietitian nutritionist and author shared her tips for getting #5MoreNow from your diet. * Think of every meal as a "Monday Morning" Since most people have good intentions on Monday morning. *Spring clean your pantry. Spend five minutes pulling out junk items from your pantry that tempt you, that you don't like, or that you will never use-- *Exercise the buddy system and be consistent. Everyone knows it's more fun to work out with a friend. *Eat real food and listen to your body. Ditch packaged and processed foods and focus as much as possible on eating real, whole foods. *Drink up, the right way. Ditch sugar-laden and diet drinks and instead, make a deal with yourself to hydrate with carbonate water, water with lemon or herbal tea. The juice bar offered samples of their Go-To Green Juice which was simple to make (kale, cucumber, red apple & ginger) and absolutely delicious. A stress-reducing massage was the perfect end to my visit to John Hancock's Vitality Village. It was also a reminder to take time out of our busy lives to relax and unwind. LensCrafters gets you ready for Back to School
*Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post. I received complimentary eye exams & glasses for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
I have been wearing glasses for 20+ years and try to get my eyes checked about every other year. After having children, I just assumed that their eyes would be checked at their annual physical exam at the pediatrician and I would find out of they needed further eye testing. After attending a back to School Event hosted by Lenscrafters #LCgoesBTS, my eyes were opened. There were eye doctors on hand available to chat and readily answer questions. I learned that I should have my children's eyes checked annually as early as a year old just like I schedule their pediatrician & dental appointments. I decided that we would make a family visit to get our eyes checked this summer just in time for the Back to School season.
Astonishing facts *Children ages 8 to 18 spend more than seven hours each day with electronics *75% of American children under age 8 have access to a smartphone or tablet *Reports show 1 in 4 kids have an undiagnosed vision problem *It's estimated that 80% of a child's learning is visual *Simple school vision screenings detect just 5% of vision problems This was my boys, "T"(age 4) & "A" (age 2) first comprehensive eye exam. I was impressed at all the technology available that made the exam thorough and comfortable. The boys were very cooperative and curious about all the machines. The staff was very pleasant, informed and child friendly. Optomap® allows your eye doctor examine your eyes without using drops to dilate them. With Optomap, in a split second, your eyes are digitally scanned and captured in a color image that shows a "map" of your visual system. LensCrafters’ exclusive AccuFit™ Digital Measurement System measures your eyes five times more precisely than traditional methods, down to a tenth of a millimeter. Meaning you get to see your world more clearly. The MyLook camera application lets you see yourself clearly in four different glasses at once, helping you choose the right frames for your face, your look, and your life. Although the boys do not need glasses...yet (it looks like they are slightly but not enough for corrective lenses) they were excited to each choose a pair of sunglasses and ended up picking out matching RayBan aviators. Letting kids shop for their own frames ensures that they will love them and wear them daily. LensCrafters offers a selection of quality, kid-friendly eyewear including Ray-Ban Junior and the Disney Eyewear Collection, as well as frames from Ray-Ban and Vogue Eyewear that are perfect for teens. I decided to finally get a pair of prescription sunglasses, a pair of Tiffany & Co. aviators .I don't know how I have survived this long without a pair, they have truly been a necessity with all the time we are spending outdoors this summer. Always wear sunglasses when outdoors and make sure the lenses provide 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. The start of a new school year is the perfect time to make sure your kids are seeing their best. Schedule an eye exam for the entire family at one of LensCrafters more than 900 stores across North America. -SD |
#LetsTalk about Long Term Care with Genworth
Disclaimer: I wrote this review while participating in a campaign for Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Genworth. I attended a live event and received a promotional item to thank me for participating
The boys and I recently attended an event in Flatiron, NYC to learn about Genworth's long term care options and the Genworth Let’s Talk Tour that will be visiting 5 cities (New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco & Dallas) in the US this summer. We were able to learn more about long term care, enjoy a cup of Birch Coffee's cold brew & have some fun in the photo booth. This is a subject that is extremely important to discuss and really hits home for me especially since I recently lost my father suddenly three years ago and am still working through the bills for the care he received during his last days; I wish we had discussed long term care while he was alive and well. Although it is a difficult subject, I have made it a point to start the conversation with my mother as well as with my husband to ask the important question: “How do you want to age?” to begin an open dialogue.
I was happy to be enlightened by Genworth representatives & listen to Rob Lowe, a Genworth spokesperson discuss long term care insurance: an insurance policy that helps covers the cost of long term care support and services that we regularly require as we age. With long term care insurance, individuals receive peace of mind knowing that they possess the resources and network in place to age the way they planned, even if they do not have funds to pay for their care out of their own pockets. Many of the facts took me by surprise and it solidified just how important this subject is for everyone.
I was surprised to find out the actual costs of long term care (provided by www.genworth.com)
*Services at an adult day health care center cost more than $16,000 a year.
*One year of home health aide services costs, on average, more than $45,000.
*One-bedroom room in an assisted living facility is typically a $42,000 annual expense.
And the most astonishing fact was that:
*Americans older than 40 are more likely to plan for their death than plan for their long term care needs. While two-thirds have discussed funeral arrangements with loved ones, fewer than half have talked about their preferences for the care they might need as they age.
This was truly an eye opening experience and I am ready to begin the discussion with my loved ones to begin preparing for our long term care well before it is needed using Genworth's #LetsTalk Tips

- Talk in person (carve out time to have this conversation with your loved one face-to-face)
- Be Open (Tell them you would like to talk about these issues and ask if they'd mind)
- Make It About Them (Keep the conversation focused on their lives and their wishes)
- Have A Sense Of Humor (Relax, smile and be reassuring. Humor is a great icebreaker)
- Listen, Really Listen (Be open and respectful of their opinions, even if their responses are not what you want to hear)
- Enjoy The Journey (While you have purpose, allow the conversation flow. It's all about connecting)

CBR, Cord Blood Registry 411
*Disclaimer: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for the Cord Blood Registry. I received promotional item to thank me for my participation.
I was recently invited to attend a breakfast at The Russian Tea Room to learn more about CBR, Cord Blood Registry. I had originally contemplated banking my oldest son's stem cells but never felt that I had enough information to make an informed decision. After learning all about the amazing advances and the array of diseases that can be treated by cord blood stem cells, I now feel more informed and better equipped to bank any of my future child's newborn stem cells. I was also able to meet and personally hear the impact that stem cells have had in the lives of the Connelly family after their second daughter suffered a stroke: using her newborn stem cells has helped her recover further than any of her doctor's could have ever imagined. Cord blood stem cells, found in the umbilical cord, have been used in the treatment of more than 80 conditions and are currently being evaluated in FDA-regulated clinical trials for their potential regenerative ability in common health issues including autism, cerebral palsy, pediatric stroke and traumatic brain injury. Banking newborn stem cells is a gift for your baby, your family and future generation which is why the option to bank or not to bank should be included in all expectant parents checklists.
-SD
Here are 3 key things I learned:
*The natural function of stem cells is to regenerate.
*CBR is involved in FDA regulated clinical trials
*Newborn Possibilities Program offers free collection, shipping, processing & five years of storage for families with history of serious diseases
World’s Largest Family Umbilical Cord Blood & Tissue Bank
A pioneer in newborn stem cell collection and cryopreservation and the world’s largest and most experienced family cord blood stem cell company, Cord Blood Registry (CBR) believes in the power of cord blood stem cells to improve lives today and their potential to revolutionize treatment for many conditions in the future.
Headquartered in San Bruno, Calif., CBR has spent the past 20 years driving innovation and is dedicated to advancing the clinical applications of newborn stem cells.

Breastfeeding & Evenflo
*Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post.
As an avid breastfeeding supporter, I am always on the lookout for new and innovative products and companies that offer resources for breastfeeding mothers. I was exited to learn more about Evenflo's new Advance Double Electric Breast Pump ($99-$159)and their collaboration with Shari Crisco.
Today kicks off World Breastfeeding Week and with breastfeeding rates on the rise, Evenflo Feeding®, the number one purchased brand in breast pumps, deepens its commitment to helping all moms achieve
breastfeeding and pumping success by overcoming two of the biggest barriers she faces -- lack of education and access to high-value, affordable equipment. This month, the brand will launch the Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump, a premium pump at an attainable price, and world-class online education programs called “Simply Breastfeeding” and “Breast Pumps and Briefcases” available free with purchase (normally a $60 value.) Both the advanced breast pump and free online educational programs were designed in partnership with International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Shari Criso to offer nursing moms the advice, support and premium tools they need.
Shari Criso’s Top 3 Breastfeeding Tips
-Tip #1: Become as knowledgeable and educated as possible about breastfeeding BEFORE you have your baby. Trying to wing it after the baby comes or rely on the staff at the hospital to teach you could be a disaster and the reason why breastfeeding may not be successful.
-Tip #2: Purchase what you will need to make breastfeeding more comfortable and easy, especially in the first few weeks when you are adjusting and it is usually the most difficult time. You don't have to spend a lot of money to accomplish this, but assume that you WILL be successful and get what you need. That’s why I helped design the Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump from Evenflo, a premium pump at an affordable price (starting at $99.99.) I know that for most moms not having what you need is the reason that breastfeeding does not go well or as expected.
-Tip #3: Make sure you are surrounded with support. One of the biggest challenges and reasons for moms not having the success that they want with breastfeeding, is not getting the support from the people around them. Get your partner on board with education and information. A supportive partner is one of the biggest reasons for breastfeeding success. Find friends and other breastfeeding moms who were successful to speak to and line up a lactation consultant before you deliver so you can reach out for help as soon as you need it.

Cookies for Dinner (book review)
*Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post. I was given a complimentary copy to read for review purposes.
Cookies for Dinner written by Pam Johnson- Bennett and Kae Allen is a comical yet informative book about motherhood. It is designed to entertain the reader while sharing
serious and profound experiences on child rearing. The authors allow mothers to laugh and reflect on their own accolades and failures with the turn of each page. This book is a mother’s guide to embracing the mysteries and wonders of being a first time, second time, and third time mom. While reading Cookies for Dinner, mothers are allowed to enter a judgment free zone where there is no right or wrong way to master potty training, shopping with kids, or child proofing your home. If you are looking for a funny and interesting way to tackle mother hood then Cookies for Dinner is a must read.

From Pam: When it came time to sit down and write our book about our motherhood experiences, I was concerned that my stories wouldn’t be very
interesting. After all, even though I think my family is very entertaining, I wasn’t sure strangers would feel the same way. I worried night after night about whether I should just scrap the whole idea and go back to normal life. Not being a quitter though, I pressed on and the stories just poured out of me. About three or four stories into the book, I realized that I actually had another problem – the stories about my mothering skills were weren’t just entertaining… they were embarrassing. So then my sleepless nights consisted of me worrying about whether I would be doing psychological damage to my children by letting the whole world know the Bennett family secrets. After reading some of Kae’s stories though, I realized I wasn’t alone and that in their own special way, every mother has quite a collection of survival tales from the motherhood trenches. Kae and I are just willing to put our names on our stories and hope our kids don’t end up in therapy. |
From Kae: Funny thing is, writing the book never struck me as “going public.” For years I have been regaling anyone who would stand still for five seconds about the antics of the Allen family. I am always using my “I’m no June Cleaver” stories as a balm to the skinned egos and psyches of my fellow mothers. I started on my journey as a mother as a green little 20-year-old, so believe me when I say, I have lots of growing experiences to share with other mothers who wake up in the morning to face another day in the trenches of the love/hate realm of motherhood. The hardest part of “Going Public” for me was the actual
writing part. Thanks to Pam and her wonderful guidance and patience, I think I have finally found my “voice” as Pam would say, as a writer. |
Citibabes Prenatal 101I attended the Citibabes Prenatal 101 and was surprised to be introduced to some new brands/products and services. I attended this annual event for the first time, over three years ago, when I was expecting my first baby. As always Citibabes delivered fabulous food, experts, products, demonstrations, raffles, gift bags and a playspace for the little ones!
Even though I consider myself to be a seasoned mother, I learned a few things at this amazingly informative event. Here is a rundown: *Nine Naturals (beauty without compromise for pregnancy and beyond): this company carries a line of beauty products that are 100% naturally derived, premium, high performing organic ingredients with refreshing, aromatic fragrances. *Junior's Fresh (food for your baby) This company uses local, seasonal and organic ingredients sourced from NYC area farms with high nutrient content and small carbon footprint. The food is chef designed & baby approved for children from 4 months to 5 years old. *Borrow for Your Bump (grow.borrow.return) is an online maternity boutique that rents and sells contemporary designer clothing for the expectant mom with flair. *Milkin' Cookies (delicious lactation cookies for nursing moms) *Soho Sanctuary (spa, beauthy and fitness for women) *Maternal Dance (rhythm for life) is a fun way to increase body awareness, maintain flexibility, and build strength and endurance for labor. I was also happy to see some companies/products/services I know and love in attendance: *Rate My Baby Nurse features baby nurse & doula reviews. *Little Pim (#1 Early Language Learning Program) *La Voila (beauty at your door) *Bump Brooklyn (give up wine, coffee, sushi---not fashion) -SD *Disclaimer: I was not compensated to write this post. I was given a complimentary ticket to attend. |
Use What You Know: A Business Idea Guide for MomsAs I scrolled through the pages of Joyce Brewer’s e-book Use What You Know: a Business Idea Guide for Moms,I found it to be both interesting and inspiring. The book contained a wealth of knowledge that motivates the reader to consider capitalizing on transferrable skills often overlooked or under considered. I loved how Brewer and the other women incorporated resources that are user friendly and affordable (Vistaprint, Living Social, Meetup.com etc.). Each individual story sparked a new desire in me to take a chance on living my own dream of becoming my own boss. As Brewer mentions in the book, the demands of a traditional 9-5 can be overwhelming and challenging once one has become a parent. Therefore, I intend to take her advice and set small tasks for myself that lead to the ultimate goal of running my own business. I must thank Brewer for the treasured inspiration and sample business plan to be used as a template. I intend on attending some of the webinars and social meeting places she discusses. Optimistically, with dedication and time I hope to share my story of a new start up business (owning my on Co-op Pre-School). This book was a great read and I would recommended it to any woman who has a dream, but needs a push to start her own business using the skills and creativity she already possesses.
