Dino Lovers head to Fieldstation in NJ!
*Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post. I received complimentary tickets for review purposes all opinions are my own.
My boys & I are true lovers of everything prehistoric, so when we were invited to check out Fieldstation, we jumped at the opportunity. In preparation for our day with the dinos, the boys picked out proper paleontologist/dinosaur enthusiast attire complete with a pith helmet, our Playskool camera as well as a couple dinosaur themed activities for the 40 minute car ride.
We arrived in Secaucus, NJ and everyone had their eyes peeled for dino sitings. Fieldstation welcomed us with an ancient looking arch & the promise of a fun-filled day. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by an enthusiastic photographer who set us up in front of a green screen and encouraged us to make scary faces at a mask that would be replaced with a ferocious dinosaur in our finished picture. We were given a number to view/purchase the picture in the gift shop later. We immediately began following the dirt path, making sure to stay on the pedestrian side of the ropes with our eyes and ears alert for any prehistoric creatures. It wasn't long before we encountered our first dinosaur, Dilophosaurus, who moved and made dinosaur noises. We followed the path and ran into Apatosaurus, Ankylosaurus & Parasaurolophus before stopping for an arts & crafts break. The kids were thoroughly entertained by the gigantic animatronic dinosaurs as well as the various activities along the path (coloring station, a game show tent, building block area, live shows & the fossil dig site). There are more activities on site: the 3D Movie Dinosaurs Alive, Dinosaurs After Dark & Dozin' with Dinos. We had a full day of prehistoric exploration & we even learned a few new facts along the way. Field Station is a must for any dinosaur loving kid & adult. Admission Prices: Day passes are $25 per adult & $20 per child (ages 3-11) save with advance purchase day passes are $20 per adult & $17.50 per child) or purchase a Season Pass. This past weekend we were invited to the premiere of Making Books Sing Dear Albert Einstein show. We were excited to see the show and it was a great one! The performance was funny & relayed an important message: "Be Yourself"! Susan, the main character is torn between being a "nerd" and being "cool" and fitting in. Albert Einstein is a manifestation of her imagination and guides her to be herself. The show was entertaining and the little ones loved it!

Culinary Kids Food Festival - NY Botanical Garden
What do you get when you mix cheese, pickles, wheat flour, spices, and basil? No, not a stomach ache! You get the Culinary Kids Food Festival at the NY Botanical Garden! Mykaela and I had the pleasure of attending the event courtesy of Thirty Mommy and we had a wonderful time. Upon entering the event we picked up a Kitchen Journal to log Mykaela’s experiences at each station.
At the Cheesemonger’s Shop we learned all about the different animals who produce the milk we use for making
cheese. Cows, goats, and sheep! We learned how to make ricotta cheese and even got to sample some that was made right at the booth. What a huge difference from the store bought stuff! I am now on a mission to buy a cheesecloth and make my own.
The Tip Top Pickle Shop was a bit too technical and scientific to keep my 2 year old’s attention so we didn’t spend much time there. There were talks of pH balances and what constitutes a liquid being acidic, neutral, and basic. I would have liked to stay and at least try a pickle but I was being dragged away and pulled toward the spice table with the very attractive globe. Sorry Tip Top Pickle Shop, you were a bit too boring for the younger crowd.
Our next stop was Spice Adventures. Mykaela particularly enjoyed this station exclaiming “Mommy! It smells wonderful over here!” We learned about spices, where they come from, and how mixing different spices together can make a whole new spice. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves make wonderful apple pie spice, while cinnamon, cumin, coriander, black pepper, and cloves create a very fragrant Indian spice called Garam Masala. If you like to heat things up you should blend cinnamon, dried onion, dried garlic, thyme, black pepper, cayenne, and all spice for a knock your socks off Jerk seasoning! The presenter showed the children on the globe where in the world each spice is found and they all had the opportunity to get a stamp and mark the country on a big map. The kids had a ball with this and although I am quite positive there are no spices that originate in Antarctica, there were several stamps there as well.
After Spice Adventures it was off to the Bakery! I just knew this was going to be a hit with my little one as she is quite the baker. Well, I was almost right. There was no actual baking going on here to my disappointment. I was really looking forward to a cupcake or something (sorry, my inner fat girl saw “bakery” and got excited). Instead of yummy baked goods we learned about grinding wheatberries in a wheat grinder to make flour. The kids were excited about turning the grinder handle and making flour though so even though there were no cakes, cookies, or cupcakes the kiddos were still entertained.
At our final station, Seed Packet, the children learned about seeds and how they grow into plants. They learned about how some of those plants are called herbs and are used for cooking. One of the most popular herbs in the world is called basil. Basil is very easy to grow, healthy, and tastes great so guess what kind of seeds the kids got to make packets for and take home? You guessed it! Basil! The presenter was awesome and instructed the kids step by step on how to make their seed packets. Since Mykaela is still a bit on the young side, he helped her make hers
by folding her paper and letting her smooth the edges. After that he filled the little seed packets with basil seeds, sealed them, and directed the kids to the decorating station so they could color their seed packets. This concluded our tour around the festival stations. Still, there was one more thing to do...PUPPET SHOW!
The puppet show was a huge hit with kids of all ages and parents. The best part of the puppet show was that is was interactive. The awesome puppet lady sang, played a guitar, and had all the children participating in songs and dances with and without puppets. There was even one song where all the parents danced with the kids and puppets. All the parents, myself included, looked completely ridiculous and awkward but it was so much fun nobody cared. There were giggles everywhere! It was a cute show and Mykaela and I really enjoyed ourselves.
It took a bit under an hour to visit all of the stations which was fine for the 0-4 year old crowd. The 5 and up crowd could have probably used a bit more to do and see. All in all it was a nice little festival and something we’d like to do again.
Mykaela’s Favorites: Cheesemonger’s Shop, Spice Adventures, Seed Packet, and PUPPET SHOW!

New Years Eve 2013 at Sesame Place (guest post)
*I was not compensated for this post. I received complimentary passes to the park.
We visited Sesame Place on one of the coldest days of the year so far – New Years Eve to experience A Very Furry Christmas. The kids (Nicky 4 and Mila 2) were super excited and had insisted on bringing their Elmo dolls. Sesame Place has a good range of entertainment, perfect for kids from ages 2 to 10. You won’t be able to see everything in one day, especially if you are traveling with very small children. All of the wet rides were closed the day we went so that simplified things for us (we have to go back because they looked pretty fab.)
We got there just as the Elmo Christmas show in Elmo’s studio was starting. The kids really enjoyed a filming of what seemed like a live version of the Elmo TV show, complete with Dorothy and Mr. Noodle. The 1st Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanza were all explained and celebrated. Afterwards we got to take pictures on the set. Next we headed out to the Sunny Day Carousel and rode the horses.
We briefly visited the playhouse (a temporary installation) where we could have paid $20 for the kids to do traditional fair activities. We took pictures with Oscar the Grouch, visited the firehouse and then headed out of the cold and into Cookie’s Cafe for some lunch. I was pleasantly surprised by the nice salad options they had for momma. Nicky and Mila where thrilled with their Elmo plates and their chicken fingers were delicious.
Then, we were off to see A Very Furry Christmas Show in the outside theater. We really enjoyed it! Afterwards, we came out to see blankets and strollers lining the street claiming their spots for the Neighborhood Street Party Christmas Parade – but by then, my 4 year old was passed out in the stroller and my 2 year old was asking to be carried so we skipped the parade and headed home.
Great place for fun with kids under 10! We will definitely be returning in the summer.

Disney Social Media Moms On the Road Celebration
*Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post. I received an invitation to the conference & a gift bag.
I was recently able to attend the Disney Social Media Moms On the Road Celebration at their stop here in NYC at the Doubletree Hotel in Times Square. I was excited to see what Maria Bailey, host of Mom Talk Radio, and Disney had planned for us! The day began with a scrumptious breakfast and swag bag, followed by a super energetic MC, Gary Buchanan, Social Media Managing Editor and Public Relations Manager for Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Parks who highlighted some of the innovative Disney happenings and gave us the 24 hour Disney experience in 60 seconds. Then, Maria reiterated to us how Disney Social Media Moms and Disney is focused on assisting/highlighting women in business.
The keynote speaker was Jenn Labit founder/creator of Cottonbabies, Bumgenius, Flip & Econobum shared her inspirational story of building a successful business out of necessity and $100! Her story and messages were real, motivating and eye-opening. She shared tips on how to stay focused and plan out your goals by simply writing them down. Next up was a panel of women entrepreneurs, most of whom were mothers. The panel consisted of women who shared their personal stories and encouraged us all to believe in ourselves and our products: Susanne Budofsky and Robyn Spritzer, Greater Than One Kids, Sandra Frawley, Founder of Babybindle, Lauren Levy, Magnificent Baby, Bonnie Marcus, Where Fashion Meets Paper. The closing speaker was Michelle Stepney, who shared some amazing interview tips and how to market yourself. The whole conference was completely inspiring and I left with a few new tricks/tips to pursue my ultimate goal of being an entrepreneur.

Aaron Nigel Smith & One World ChorusAaron Nigel Smith & "T"
We recently got a chance to see an amazing show that is part of the Just Kidding series at Symphony Space in NYC. Aaron and his band were full of energy; encouraging everyone in the audience to get up and get moving. His music is interactive, entertaining and educational. "T" loved the song Butterflies, where Aaron sang about the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly; encouraging the children to act it out. Then, Aaron brought up the children from the New York based One World Chorus group from the Achievement First school in East New York. The children performed wonderfully, singing, free-styling, drumming and even playing the piano. They sang a few Call & Response songs where the audience was expected to participate: Fanga Alafia & The Copy Cat Scat to name a few.
After the show, we were able to meet Aaron and ask him a few questions. "T" was interested in knowing which instruments Aaron played and if he took his family with him on his trips to Jamaica & Africa. Aaron told us that he plays the guitar, bass, drums and he sings. He also explained that he did not take his family on the trips with him as they were all non-profit excursions to meet and work with students and schools. I wanted to know how Aaron began working with children and how many schools are currently involved in the One World Chorus Project. Aaron described his background as a professional opera singer which led him to begin teaching preschool music classes once he started his family. There are schools in Portland, Los Angeles, New York, Kenya and Jamaica currently participating in the One World Chorus program. Learn more about this amazing program, buy CD's & donate. -SD *Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post. We received complimentary tickets to attend the event. |

Expanding the One World Chorus, Aaron recently returned from a trip to Jamaica, where he recorded songs with children at schools and an orphanage. Baby Loves Disco & so do Mommy & Daddy!
We got a chance to jam in our pajamas at Baby Loves Disco: The Original Family Dance Party for pajama month in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge. This party was truly amazing and it was really fun for the whole family. There was music, tons of complimentary snacks and drinks, face painting, arts & crafts, "dance-offs", dancing, disco lights and the bar was open for adults to purchase drinks.
"Baby loves disco is an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun and mixed by real djs blending classic disco tunes
From the 70s, & 80s with today’s hottest dance tunes…..guaranteed to get those little booties moving and grooving."
We arrived at Le Poisson Rouge and headed through the red velvet ropes, checked in and went downstairs to hang up our coats (stroller check was available too). We walked by some activity tables set up by Macaroni Kids(Downtown), New York Life, Little Passports, ESF Camps and Freshmade NYC that we promised to check out after we had snacked & danced a bit. There were a variety of snacks to enjoy: fruits, vegetables, dip, cereal, muffins, poptarts, popcorn, bagels, cookies, cupcakes, Horizon chocolate milk and Honest Kids juice pouches. "T", 3 years old was in total amazement when we walked on the dance floor: he stared at the disco ball and began to dance to the music. The DJ played a mixture of dance music from the 70s, 80s, 90s as well as some contemporary songs...all rated PG. The MC interacted with everyone on the dance floor through organizing individual and family dance contests (complete with prizes), leading a group dance and even letting the kids sing into the microphone. The bubble machine and "crawlers only" area fascinated "A" (1 year old) and he was content sampling a variety of snacks and dancing with his daddy. We snacked, danced, crafted, danced, snacked our afternoon away. Baby Loves Disco is a must for fun family entertainment. Check out when BLD will be partying at a club in your area and buy your tickets today! The price is between $12-$20 per person (depending on venue and city) and Family 4 packs are offered at a discount for a 2-3 hour party. I can't wait till BLD comes back to NYC next month because we WILL be there!

GRUGWe recently went to see Grug at the New Victory Theater. We were unfamiliar with this well-know Australian character and were pleasantly surprised and entertained by his stories. There were preshow activities including coloring, letter making and snacks (
for purchase). Seating was by general admission but as it was a cozy theater it really didnt make a difference where we sat. Once inside the theater the performers walked around and interacted with the audience: asking questions and getting to know us. The show was approximately 45 minutes long and held the attention of both my 1 and 3 year olds for its entirety. We were introduced to Grug and a few of his friends, learned the "Grug" dance. After the show, the audience was allowed to come up and meet the puppets and get a closer look at the set. The show is a great production and fun for the whole family! Grug is currently showing at The New 42nd Street Studios ( 229 West 42nd St.in NYC) until March 17th and tickets are $20 or $14 (for members). -SD *Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post. Family Concert: What is Latin Jazz
Latin Jazz fuses intoxicating Afro-Caribbean and Pan-American rhythms with the elevated harmonic structure and instrumental virtuosity of jazz. rummer, percussionist, and educator Bobby Sanabria will lead his Multiverse Big Band in introducing families to the idiom’s concepts and historical timeline. Sanabria’s celebrity in Latin jazz is renowned, having shared the stage over the years with Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente,
Paquito D'Rivera, Chico O'Farrill, and the Godfather of Afro-Cuban Jazz, Mario Bauzá. This South Bronx native and Grammy award nominee will have audiences of all ages tapping their feet and moving to the beat
I entered a contest on New York Loves Kids to win a family 4 pack of tickets to attend the Family Concert: What is Latin Jazz and I won! We attended the event at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater and had such a great time! The show was super interactive and educational. We were encouraged to clap beats and get out of our seats and dance. We learned all about the history of Latin Jazz in NYC.

DiMenna Children's Museum at the NY Historical Society
Picture from a review by Kaitlin Ahern for NY Metro Parents
One of my 2013 promises was to plan time every month for a Family Adventure Day. We decided to visit the DiMenna Children's History Museum in the NY Historical Society. I had visited a few years back and was excited to discover that they now had a childrens museum too! The museum is very easy to find and very accessible to public transportation plus it is wheelchair/stroller accessible! We had a great time exploring the Children's Museum: learning some swing dance moves from the lovely instructors at Made 4 Kids Music & Dance Education (Paul Pellicoro's DanceSport), completing a scavenger hunt and learning lots of cool facts. We also enjoyed walking through the rest of the building where we looked at a Toy Train display, amazing photography of the city and tons of art and artifacts! After a few hours we were ready for dinner and decided to eat at the amazing Cafe Storico, housed in the same building. We had a fun and educational adventure at the DiMenna Children's Museum and will definitely be returning for more!

Caffe Storico at NY Historical Society
To make reservations call 212-485-9211
Acclaimed restaurateur Stephen Starr, of Buddakan and Morimoto, brings casual elegance to the New-York Historical Society with Caffè Storico (Italian for “historic”).
We decided to have dinner at Caffe Storico with the boys and were a bit apprehensive at first because of the immaculate/fancy decor. We were warmly greeted and seated by the hostess and "A" was given a high chair. Our server was helpful and knoledgeable in offering suggestions for appetizers, drinks and entrees. All the food we ordered was amazing! My husband had the Langostino Fritto and the Handmade Ferratini and I had the Caesar salad with marinated anchovies and Rigatoni with Sausage Ragu. We also enjoyed a selection of Italian cookies and pistachio gelato along with caffe. We can't wait to dine here again...perhaps the Sunday evening Prix Fixe!

Catimini in NYC
We visited the Catimini Boutique (1125 Madison Avenue, New York, NY) where we were able to visit with Santa, take pictures, draw pictures, eat brioche and best of all shop! Catimini is a French boutique filled with apparrel and accessories for boys and girls ages 0-16 years old! The brand was created in 1972 by Monique and Paul Salmon. The clothing is well made, whimsical and unique: I enjoyed shopping in the boutique and picking up a few things for my boys! Thanks for the invitation @mariesaeki

Citibabes Winter Wonderland
I attended the Citibabes annual Winter Wonderland Party with my husband, "T" (3 years old and "A" a year old. There were a variety of activities including free-play on the indoor playground, cupcake decorating, Holiday storytime and book fair, arts & crafts, holiday portraits taken by Bellamy Blue Photography and a rockin concert with the Rockdoves! We were greeted at the door, where we checked in, checked our outerwear and our stroller. Immediately, "T" saw the indoor playground and wanted to play right away, I convinced him to walk around first and then we would decide what to do. My plan was to get our holiday portraits taken first before the little ones started to play. We had our portraits taken ("A" needed a wardrobe change) and then headed over to the cupcake decorating room where we ran into Mommy Factor who was just finishing up their cupcake. "T" picked a cupcake and began to design and decorate his masterpiece which he quickly devoured. Next, he wanted to hit the indoor playground, so he played a bit and we enjoyed the Rockdoves Concert with Mommy Factor! It was a great family day filled with fun activities.

CITIBABES Halloween Spooktacular
I attended Citibabes Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday, October 27th with my 18 month-old daughter "L". First I would like to say that the venue was easy to find, stroller friendly, and very spacious. There were many activities for "L" to do. Once we got off the elevator and checked in with the greeter "L", who was dressed up as a little kitty started to pull away as she was admiring the decor and other children in costumes. The first room we went into was the face painting room where "L" got made-up for the first time ever! LaVoila was the host of this station and they did a wonderful job on making her kitty costume standout. The next room was the Pumpkin decorating station where she was able to “pick” her own pumpkin from a table full of them. “L” sat down and went to work on her new Halloween art piece. On to door three, this was for Halloween story readings. "L" was attracted to this room even though it was dark and had green strobe lights highlighting the wall. She entered with no fear and sat down on the floor for a few stories. "L" was the first to stop in for the morning, however many followed and sat with her as they were read spooky stories full of pumpkins and ghosts. After the interactive story time we went into the Bellamy Blue Photography's room and "L" starred in a mini photo shoot. It was the cutest thing to see all the children dressed up in costumes getting their photos taken. I can say I am very thankful for being one of the first to arrive; later on the line became very long. We returned to the photography room before we left to receive our free photo, and I am able to view the other pictures taken on their website (which are available for purchase). Our next stop was the cookie decorating room. "L" was given her choice of a pumpkin shaped or a bat shaped cookie. She chose the pumpkin and right away it went to her mouth. She sat down and one of the decorators showed her how to put icing and sprinkles on her cookie. "L" iced her pumpkin in orange and before putting the sprinkles on the cookie she took a spoonful of icing right to the mouth. She sat there dancing in
her chair to the music in the background and ate her cookie. Finally, we ventured back to the front to the big play area made for infants, toddlers and preschoolers; "L" went up and down the slide, played with blocks, grabbed balloons, and rode the horse before it was time to go. I thanked Jessica Pollard (Assistant General Manager of Citibabes) for extending the invite to ThirtyMommy and we look forward to attending many more events here!
