Support TEAM FOR KIDS!
One of my BFF's from grade school, Winfrida, has been training to complete her first marathon this Fall, NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 2 on behalf of a wonderful charity, New York Road Runners TEAM FOR KIDS. She has been taking her training seriously and just completed 15 miles last weekend! She feels ready to dash through the city's boroughs come November but now she needs to buckle down and seek fundraising for her charity of choice.
TEAM FOR KIDS is a team of volunteers who raise funds for critical services provided by New York Road Runners Youth Programs. These programs combat childhood obesity and empower youth development via running and character-building programs in low-income schools and community centers in NYC, throughout the country, and in Africa. For more info, visit: http://www.runwithtfk.org/Page/About.
Feel free to contribute to this fantastic cause by TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30. All you have to do is go to her personal and secure fundraising page to make a TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation: http://runwithtfk.org/Profile/PublicPage/16654. As an extra bonus, donations of $125 or more will receive a limited edition t-shirt! Thanks in advance for your support!

Keep Momming
*Disclaimer: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Shire. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.
As an actress, a public health advocate and former journalist, Holly Robinson Peete has seen it all. And as a mother of four, she’s encountered just about every parenting challenge you can imagine. One of her biggest challenges as mom is building and maintaining a close relationship with her teenage daughter, Ryan.
The mother-daughter relationship is a unique one, and that dynamic can be even trickier during the tween years. Yet sometimes, people dismiss certain behaviors as “typical tween girl behavior” when those behaviors can be symptoms of something more serious. Research suggests that girls are more likely than boys to report having mostly inattentive Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms. Since inattentive symptoms can be less noticeable than hyperactive and impulsive symptoms, it is important that moms know what to look for.
I’m proud to be joining forces with Shire, CHADD and Holly Robinson Peete to announce the launch of keep momming, a new public service initiative geared towards the moms of tween girls to raise awareness of ADHD.
The campaign is anchored within a new digital hub, KeepMomming.com, where you’ll find tips, tools and other go-to resources for moms, including a checklist to help recognize the symptoms of ADHD – inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity – and then encourages moms to talk to their daughter’s doctor. The keep momming initiative can help moms learn about ADHD and provide ideas on how to spark a conversation and stay connected with their tween.
Don’t miss Holly’s message about the keep momming initiative http://goo.gl/Uayao5, and be sure to check out the website at KeepMomming.com.

National Lemonade Days June 6-8
Hosting a fundraising lemonade stand was the inspired idea of ALSF founder Alexandra “Alex” Scott. True to the spirit of the phrase “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” Alex, at age four, held a lemonade stand to help find a cure for all childhood cancers, including her own. Since that time, more than 20,000 Alex’s Lemonade Stands have been held across the country!
While volunteers hold stands throughout the year (often setting them up indoors, in cold weather seasons), National Lemonade Days is a time when volunteers everywhere can join forces as they hold stands simultaneously across the country.
National Lemonade Days is a meaningful, nationwide event that started in Alex’s front yard and has grown to front yards across America. Most importantly, National Lemonade Days raises more than $1 million for childhood cancer research, one cup at a time!
Held the weekend before Father's Day every June, this three day event (Friday through Sunday) is open to all who want to participate by holding their own fundraising stands or events. Gather your family, your co-workers or your friends, and have fun creating your own Alex’s Lemonade Stand event. See the difference WE can make, in one weekend, together!
THIRTYMOMMY will be hosting a local National Lemonade Day stand in Brooklyn, NYC on Sunday, June 8th! DONATE!

Aviva Drescher hosts charity event benefiting Max Cure Foundation at Cozy's Cuts for Kids in NYC, and celebrates launch of new book, Leggy Blonde
This past Tuesday, March 4th, author, mom and philanthropist Aviva Drescher hosted a charity event at Cozy's Cuts for Kids salon on the Upper East Side to benefit the Max Cure Foundation and celebrate the launch of her new book, Leggy Blonde.
Aviva was on hand with her two youngest kids, Sienna and Hudson, to sign books and pose for photos with fans. During the event, Sienna got one of Cozy’s signature heart braids by one of the Cozy stylists, as well as a glitter manicure. Hudson got to "Dunk His Kicks" to benefit the Max Cure foundation, raising funds for pediatric cancer.
The event was an amazing way for Aviva to celebrate the launch of her new book while also teaching her kids about the power of giving back, and that it can start at a young age and is easy and fun to do. The salon was packed with kids, and they raised great awareness for the cause.

#NoRoomForBullyingYES SIR!! NO SIR!! Amidst children that are pre-school aged and older you hear the roar of confidence displayed within the respectful response to a question asked by Master Carlos Gracie Jr., instructor at Gracie Barra Long Island Martial Arts school located in New Hyde Park , NY . Joe Scarola is the Head instructor, President and host of anti-bully seminars for local youth in the past. The following is a link to the site, http://gblongisland.com. The focus of this particular event is on an ongoing anti-bully seminar that teaches children as young as 2 yrs. of age, simple self-defense techniques to utilize when faced with a situation where they are being antagonized/bullied: while also teaching important life skills. Such as lesson #1, the ignoring technique, simply illustrated by two instructors, one who is the bully and makes negative comments regarding the other instructors’’ clothing or appearance and the other who is faced with the dilemma on what to do when he hears the comment. The person, who is being made fun of, pretends to grab the negative comment by raising a hand in the air and pretends to throw it in the air and walks away as if it never happened, ignoring the bully. This technique encourages positive reactions and independent thinking to negative situations that these children may encounter.
The environment at Gracie Barra is children friendly and safety is foremost. Floor mats cover the entire area where you walk barefoot; there are padded poles, along with netted areas that encourage safe play. When it came time for the “little people” to demonstrate the techniques learned, they are asked to pair up and introduce themselves to one another and then allowed to act out bullying situations and how to handle them in a positive way. This produced a lot of laughter and broke the ice amongst the kids and the parents too. One other technique called the “Bridge /Roll”, it demonstrates how to remove an individual off of you while using your legs and arms to pin them down without injury to self or the bully and without use of an actual weapon. My 3 yr old Dominique , enjoyed herself immensely while learning how to defend herself. She also made new friends and has since been practicing her own version of the ignore technique while out and about . It shows children are easily influenced and learn by watching adults and their peers interact. In this particular case positively and confidently as taught by the great instructors at Gracie Barra Long island. Special thanks to bloggers Vida Aka Mommy Lok and Maria Wen aka Bicultural Mama, for inviting parents and children to participate in GBLI Anti-Bully seminar. #NoRoomForBullying. -MidnightMamaMei, Tania Saintil Email address: midnightmamamei@gmail.com JOIN US FRIDAY 8/16 AT 11:30AM (EST) ON TWITTER FOR A #NOROOMFORBULLYING CHAT |
Boys & Girls Club of America Tools for back to School
*Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post. I received an invitation for the event.
"T" and I were invited to the Boys & Girls Club of America WAKE UP CALL Back to School kick off event in New York City. Shaquille O'Neal and his mother, Ms. Lucille, were there talking about their personal experiences with BGCA, Radio Disney's Coco Jones performed as well as groups of students from the BGCA and Shaq even participated in a unique back to school obstacle course with the children. The festivities continued with JCPenny giving each child a brand new book bag that they were able to decorate and personalize on the spot and Michaels had pennants & megaphones for the kids to decorate! There are a number of ways to help children of the Boys & Girls Club of America get the tools they need for school. Find out how you can help!

The event was sponsored by Merck and hosted by SheSpeaks and I was happy to be a part of such an amazing movement. Fellow bloggers were invited to the Gramercy Rooftop Garden where we were able to have small group conversations with “experts” and then a Q&A with Hasselbeck. I had a great time chatting with the three parenting experts and took a way some great tips to incorporate into my everyday life in order to get my family up, out and active:
-Amy McCready, parenting educator and Today show contributor gave us advice on how to incorporate
instances for pure play in pour everyday lives.
1. Take 15 minutes a day to get down and really “play” with your kids to meet their needs as well
as allow them to burn some energy
2. Be creative when finding ways to play with your family
-Erin Gifford, a family travel expert, gave some amazing travel tips to help with spending more quality
time together while on vacation.
1. Use vacation rentals for more personal space instead of being crammed into one hotel room
2. Find & utilize a laundry service to save precious time from doing laundry
-Fred Engh, founder of the National Alliance of Youth Sports (NAYS)
1. Focus on sportsmanship instead of winning/losing
2. Be a coach for your child
During the Q&A portion, Hasselbeck was very open and honest about her family life and admitted that she truly enjoys being out and active with her kids, especially in their back yard. Her devotion to a healthy active lifestyle is truly inspirational and illustrates that with determination, we can all live actively even while juggling our career and professional responsibilities.
The Active Family project website has made it easy to find activities in your area by taking care of the hard part; the research. Using the site, you can simply put in your zip code into the Activity Finder, search by category and a variety of options are at your fingertips! So, with this new resource in your arsenal, what new activities will you be participating in with your family? How will you be celebrating National Family Playdate on May 11th?
